Mindtrace - Vocabulary generation in a drawing spaceInspired by the constructivists, we (Daniel Rosenberg and I) set out on a research program to investigate design as a pre-representational (pre-symbolic) process. Unlike contemporary frameworks which are heavily dependent of preset and fixed languages, - Mindtrace allows the user to generate his/her own language through the act of drawing. The Minolta 3D laser scanner acquires range-data using Optical triangulation. Because of this fuzzy range -finding it generates a point-cloud that is less specific, largely vague ; bordering a visual poetic. This messiness is Inspiring. - ray

As a method, we discussed several classics and enquired the proposed epistemic models in terms of the philosophy, language, process and form - eventually seeking to find connections and linkages between them.

It is proposed that within a process mediated by multiple agents following indeterminate rules, ‘emergence’ as the many possible combinations or interactions of the multiplicities could be equated to a type of ‘newness’. In a Linguistic model such an emergence can be observed in the construction of a narrative from distinct fragments of unrelated semantic content from multiple sources. Meaning is not clearly implied but heuristically extracted and rendered within a certain predication of our existence. - ray

The George ProblemA LISP machine that observes a sketch-like drawing and by reasoning generates a set of visual concepts from it spontaneously. It is argued that the knowledge base used for reasoning is schematic and not structural. This project is a failed attempt to capture George Stiny's criticism on current computational representation systems - 'descriptions fix things'.

Imagined as a sign of cultural power and ownership, the skyscraper was typified in its ‘classical heroism’ from its logically consequent tabula rasa condition. As a formulation for a utopian blank slate on which a new building is conceived, free of compromise or complication after the demolition of what previously stood on the site.
Any speculation to the order of formulating a ‘new’ condition of the ‘skyscraper’ must encounter this semantic intent and deviate from its historical tabula rasa tendencies.
